What is Aspergers Syndrome?

Aspergers Syndrome, also Aspergers Disorder,is a Pervasive Developmental Disorder characterized by severe and sustained impairment in social interaction, developmental of restricted and repeative patterns of behavior,interests and activties. These characteristics result in clincally significant impairment in social, occupational or other important areas of functioning.
In contrast to Autism, there are no clinically siginificant delays in laguage or self-help skills or adaptive behavior, other than social interaction.
Aspergers prevalence is limited but it appears common in males. Onset is later than what is seen in Autism. A larger number of children are diagnosed bewteen the ages of 5 and 9. Motor delays, cluminess, social interaction problems and socially abnormal behaviors are reported.
Adults with Aspergers Syndrome have trouble with empathy and issues of social interaction especially facial mode recognition and the disorder follows a continous course and is usaully life long.
Aspergers is not easily detected and may children are misdiagnosed with other neurological disorders such a Tourettes Syndrome or Autism. More often, misdiagnosis come in the form of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders, Oppostiional Defiant Disorder or Obsesseive Compulsive Disorder.
